What Book!? Buddha Poems from Beat to Hiphop by Gary G Gach
Synopsis:
By 1992, I had noted the revival of spiritual poetry ("devotional poetry") such as Coleman Barks' Rumi — more or less absent since the Industrial Revolution — and also all the poetry being published since 1950 ("beat") up to the present ("hiphop") influenced by Buddhism and so began gathering instances from newsletters, books, readings, friends, events, etc. The result: 350 contributions from 125 people: haiku, performance art, diaries, sonnets, mindwriting, etc. by kids, veterans, Nobel laureates, poets, monks, priests, etc.
Noted actor, Redroom author, and old ally from the '60s, Peter Coyote wrote a splendid introduction, and Jane Hirshfield, Robert Creeley, Jerome Rothenberg, and Walter Lew graced it with superb apothegms.
Three or four printings later, it's now only available new through print-on-demand from Amazon, but renewed interest might sway the publisher to bring out more copies ...
